Point University began in 1937 as Atlanta Christian College. It was founded by T. O. Hathcock, a Fulton County judge, and his wife, Nora, on a 300-acre farm she had inherited in East Point, south of Atlanta. The couple belonged to the independent Christian churches, and the university keeps that affiliation today. For decades the college mainly trained ministers, missionaries and church workers. It joined the American Association of Bible Colleges in 1965 and earned regional accreditation for associate and bachelor's degrees in 1990.
By the 2000s, metro Atlanta had grown up around the old farm campus and there was little room to expand. In February 2011 the trustees announced a new name, Point University. In fall 2012 the residential campus moved southwest down I-85 to West Point, a mill and railroad town on the Chattahoochee. There the university started with four buildings and leased apartments for housing, then gradually spread through downtown with residence halls, a student center and athletic facilities.
Growth has since come mostly online. An adult evening program launched in 2008 grew into fully online degrees, which now enroll most of Point's students. The first master's programs started in 2016. In 2022 Point launched Elevate, a program in which employers such as Chick-fil-A operators pay for workers' online degrees. Stacy A. Bartlett, a 2005 graduate, became the eighth president on July 1, 2025. She is the first woman to lead the university.
