Cuthbert · Randolph County

Georgia's campuses and the stories they hold.

The Story

Andrew College is a tiny Methodist college in the courthouse town of Cuthbert, with an oversized history. Chartered in 1854 as Andrew Female College, it held one of the earliest charters in the country allowing a college to grant degrees to women. Its five-story Victorian Old Main was built in a single year after an 1892 fire. After a century as a junior college, Andrew again offers bachelor's degrees, and its Fighting Tigers joined the NAIA in 2026.

History

The Georgia General Assembly chartered Andrew Female College on January 15, 1854. At the time it was the second charter in the United States to give a college the power to award degrees to women. The college was named for Bishop James Osgood Andrew of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. During the Civil War its building became Hood Hospital, one of three military hospitals in Cuthbert, and soldiers who died there were buried in the town's Greenwood Cemetery. After the war the college added a physical education course. Andrew says it was the first such course required of women in the South.

In April 1892 fire destroyed every building on campus. Cuthbert residents pledged money the next day, and by that fall the college had reopened in a new five-story Victorian building by Atlanta architect William H. Parkins. That building, Old Main, is still the college's landmark. Warren Bush Hall followed in 1900, and Cuthbert Hall linked the two in 1912. Future Pulitzer Prize-winning Jefferson biographer Dumas Malone taught Greek and religion here from 1914 to 1916, while his father was president.

Andrew became a two-year college in 1917 and admitted men in 1956. For decades it prepared students to transfer to four-year schools. It began offering bachelor's degrees again in 2018 and now has majors in agribusiness, health care management, sports management and more. Football, wrestling and cheerleading arrived in 2024, and in 2026 the Fighting Tigers moved from junior-college athletics to the NAIA. William R. Kennedy has been president since June 2023.
