Brewton-Parker is a small Georgia Baptist school in the pine country between Mount Vernon and Ailey. It opened in 1905 as a boarding school because the area had no public high schools, spent most of the 20th century as a junior college, and became a university in 2025 as Brewton-Parker Christian University. - Before it was a college, it taught every grade from first through eleventh. The elementary grades lasted until 1929 and high school until 1948. georgiaencyclopedia.org

In 1904 John Carter Brewton, pastor of the McRae Baptist Church, and Charles Benton Parker, a McRae businessman, set out to build a Baptist boarding school for the children of Montgomery County and nearby areas, which had no public high schools. Mount Vernon and Ailey together made the best offer of land and money, so the Union Baptist Institute was chartered in 1904 on a site between the two towns. It opened in September 1905 with 160 students in grades one through eleven, and enrollment more than doubled the next year. In 1912 it was renamed Brewton-Parker Institute to honor its founders.
College classes arrived in 1923 and 1927, turning the institute into a junior college. It dropped elementary grades in 1929 and high school classes in 1948, when it became Brewton-Parker Junior College under the Georgia Baptist Convention. The campus grew in the 1960s with a library, a science hall and a student center. On December 9, 1986, the school became a four-year institution, Brewton-Parker College.
The college weathered hard times. A federal financial aid case in the late 1990s ended in a $4 million settlement. In 2014 its accreditor voted to remove it, a decision reversed later that year when the college proved compliance. Steve Echols became its 17th president in 2015. In June 2025 the school gained university status and the name Brewton-Parker Christian University. It now offers undergraduate, online and graduate programs, including seminary training.
