History

The University System of Georgia's Board of Regents created Brunswick College in 1961. Local citizens supported a $1 million bond issue for land and buildings, and the city and county donated much of the site. Classes began in September 1964, and 28 students received associate degrees in the first graduating class in 1966. The school was renamed Brunswick Junior College in 1965, went back to Brunswick College in 1988 and became Coastal Georgia Community College in 1996. It added a Camden County center in Kingsland in 1993, which moved to a larger building in 2004.

In 2008 the regents approved turning the community college into a four-year state college and renamed it the College of Coastal Georgia. A construction boom followed: a health and sciences building for nursing, a new campus center, and the college's first residence halls in 2011. A teacher education center opened in 2013. The first bachelor's degrees were awarded on May 7, 2011, in business and education, and programs in the sciences, nursing, psychology and health informatics followed.

The college joined the NAIA in 2011, and its men's golf team won back-to-back national championships in 2014 and 2015. Athletics moved to The Sun Conference in 2017. Johnny L. Evans Jr., who had served as interim president, was named president in early 2025 and formally invested in 2026.
