History

SCAD's Atlanta location started small: 77 students enrolled when classes began in Midtown in 2005. The next year SCAD took over the Atlanta College of Art, a school founded in 1905 that had been housed at the Woodruff Arts Center on Peachtree Street. Many ACA students and faculty opposed the merger. It also brought SCAD a residence hall beside the High Museum, designed by Renzo Piano.

The location's anchor is 1600 Peachtree Street, a five-story office building completed in 1956. It now holds studios, galleries, a library and dining space. SCAD restored Ivy Hall, the 1883 Edward C. Peters House on Ponce de Leon Avenue, and reopened it in 2008 as a center for writing and the arts. In fall 2009 a former television station on West Peachtree Street became the Digital Media Center, home to film, animation and game-design labs.

In 2014 SCAD drew national attention with SCADpad, three 135-square-foot micro-homes built inside its Midtown parking deck. The SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film opened in the main building in 2015 with an Oscar de la Renta exhibition. The FORTY residence hall followed in 2019. In 2023 came FORTY FIVE, a 14-story tower with student housing, a rooftop pool and a new SCADshow theater with a 700-seat main stage. SCADshow hosts SCAD TVfest and SCAD AnimationFest every year.
