Four historically Black institutions share one stretch of southwest Atlanta: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Spelman College and Morehouse School of Medicine. Together they form the Atlanta University Center, the country's only consortium of HBCUs whose campuses touch. Students can cross-register between the schools and share a single library. The neighborhood produced Martin Luther King Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois's famous Atlanta studies, and generations of Black leaders.

The schools of the Atlanta University Center were all founded in the years after the Civil War. Atlanta University opened in 1865 and became the first HBCU to award graduate degrees to African Americans. Morehouse began in 1867 as the Augusta Institute, in the basement of a church in Augusta, and moved to Atlanta in 1879. Methodists founded Clark in 1869. In 1881 two teachers from Massachusetts started what became Spelman in the basement of Friendship Baptist Church, and John D. Rockefeller soon became a major supporter.
In April 1929 John Hope, who was then president of both Morehouse and Atlanta University, persuaded Atlanta University, Morehouse and Spelman to sign an affiliation agreement. Atlanta University became the graduate school for the group, and the colleges began sharing resources. W.E.B. Du Bois had taught at Atlanta University from 1897 to 1910 and returned in the 1930s. Clark and Morris Brown College moved next door, and in 1969 the schools started a dual-degree engineering program with Georgia Tech.
The shared Robert W. Woodruff Library opened in 1982. In 1988 Atlanta University and Clark College merged to form Clark Atlanta University. Morehouse School of Medicine, founded in 1975, joined the consortium in 1983. Morris Brown and the Interdenominational Theological Center later left the group. Today the Atlanta University Center Consortium has four members with about 11,500 students between them, and it is led by executive director Michael E. Hodge.
